Get the energy to succeed!

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

You can’t hide lack of energy and motivation since it’s evident from how you carry yourself. Sit down somewhere and watch people walking and you will quickly notice whose got what it takes and who hasn’t. How are you going to be able to move forward and create new beginnings if you don’t have it? Who would hire or do business with someone without the drive and energy to succeed?

What kind of exercise you choose is entirely up to you. Personally I thrive on swimming, yoga, roller-blading and walking.

What kind of exercise you choose is entirely up to you. Personally I thrive on swimming, yoga, roller-blading and walking.

To be inspired will not be enough if you don’t have both the physical and mental energy it takes to succeed. So now that many of you are between jobs you have no excuse for not exercising, sleeping enough and making sure you get the nutrition you need, both for your health and mental wellbeing.

When you are tired and under stimulated you don’t perform well and your results consequently leave a lot to be desired. So now is the time to change that. You have the time and it’s not more expensive, or difficult, to lead your life in ways that give you energy. Are you getting the nutrition you need through what you are eating? Are you exercising enough? At least half an hour a day, now that you have the time? Are you sleeping enough? Have you got positive relations with the people around you? How about goals? Have you set them yet? And are you taking time out for yourself to be able to think and reflect on what is important to you and why? Not to mention learning from what is not working out the way you intended?

There is no set formula for this since we are all different. What kind of exercise you choose is entirely up to you. Personally I thrive on swimming, yoga, roller-blading and walking. But if you prefer football, jogging or whatever that’s what you should do. Exercising makes your body produce endorphins, which is like a natural feel good drug. And yoga has the added benefit of completely removing stress if you breathe properly while doing it. Not to mention pranayama, the yogic breathing exercises, that have amazing benefits on your health an well-being. Sauna and steam baths are great too since you sweat out the negative energy.

Whenever I’m in a supermarket anywhere in the world I’m amazed at what people have in their trolleys. Not as bad as junk food, but almost. There is very little nutrition left in such food, so how about eating more fresh vegetables, fruit, whole-grain bread and other good sources of fibre? And to be on the safe side, take at least a multivitamin supplement to make sure you get everything you need.

Sleeping enough to recover and repair is essential. You may be one of the lucky ones that thrive on four hours a day or you may need eight? Personally I’m fine as long as I get six hours. Anything less and I’m tired. You know how much you need, so just make sure you get it.

Being surrounded by negative people have a really bad impact on you. How about trying to improve relations, when possible? Failing that I would suggest you just ignore negative people and the discouraging comments you get. Simply make an effort to be tolerant and accept that what he/she thinks is his/her opinion. We’re all different and whose right and whose wrong?

Regarding goals, if you don’t know what you are aiming for, where will you end up? Now is the time to decide what you really want to achieve in your life. But don’t be too rigid since that may prevent you from even noticing other lucrative possibilities that come your way.

Getting time for yourself may be difficult, but it’s essential in order to move on. If nothing else how about thinking through what happened during the day and how you could have done better just before you go to sleep? And then first thing in the morning thinking through and deciding what you would like to achieve during the day.

And whatever you do, don’t feel sorry for yourself or, worse, start drinking or doing drugs, because then you really are doomed. Sitting at home watching television is not a good idea either. Read inspiring books about people who have achieved something, Dale Carnegie or other motivating authors.

Scientists have actually proven that flowers and plants make us be more creative and come up more innovative solutions to problems. So get out in nature and get energy. Not only is it delightful but it also brings you closer to your goals. Even buying a plant will have a positive affect on you. So what are you waiting for, make an effort, get more energy and succeed! No health – no wealth, is another way of putting it.

Tough times never last – But tough people do

Friday, May 14th, 2010

The recent/current crisis has affected most of us, one way or another. And on top of it another crisis may be on the way. Even if that happens, the important thing is to keep your spirits high and not give up. Maybe now more than ever since the Great Depression in the 1930s?

Winston Churchill managed the impossible when the war was won against all odds.

Winston Churchill managed the impossible when the war was won against all odds.

Came across a book with the title “Tough times never last – But tough people do” a couple of years ago in a bookstore in the United Arab Emirates. Loved the title so much I bought it. Unfortunately the book didn’t live up to its wonderful title. Tough times never last, but tough people do – that ‘s how life works, isn’t it? No matter what happens you must never give up but keep on trying until you succeed. If not, you are doomed. You must build new bridges and move on. And that’s simply not possible if you start feeling sorry for yourself. Be strong, positive, innovative and courageous and it’s just a question of how long it takes before you achieve what you are aiming for.

But Rome wasn’t built in a days, so don’t expect results overnight. An Indian woman I knew in Dubai had a note by her desk saying “God’s delays are not God’s denials”, and that’s so true. Sometimes it is as if life is testing you to see if you really have what it takes to succeed. If you give up whenever there’s a set-back you will never succeed. And set-backs there will be, no matter what you try to achieve. It’s just a question of constantly finding solutions.

Yes, it’s boring I know. But what’s the alternative? Everybody would like plain sailing but things are never as easy as they seem, unfortunately. So you have to have faith in yourself and your ability to succeed. If you don’t have, why should anybody else?

Nothing is impossible, the impossible only takes longer, as Churchill said. Now is the time for you to aim for the impossible. Because what’s worthwhile many times seem impossible until you have succeeded. What’s the point in aiming for something you are not passionate about? If you are not really determined to get what you aim for you will never succeed anyway but give up at the smallest adversity. And in times like these when things are really changing the odds of going for the impossible and succeed are even higher.

So set your goal, make a plan and start taking action to get there step by step. And be flexible since once you know what you want you will find new ways that will be milestones on your road to success.

Whenever I really want something I always succeed. It’s just a question of how long it takes. Sometimes I even succeed way beyond expectations. The first time I was in Saudi Arabia on a short assignment for a business magazine I found it so interesting I wanted to spend more time there. So I made up my mind I was going to do that. Little did I think that once I was there again working for another publication I would be headhunted and become the only Western woman ever to have held a senior management position in a one hundred percent Saudi owned company in Riyadh. And not just a small company but a diversified conglomerate with 10,000 employees. Didn’t even think that was possible.

Think big, aim for the stars! It doesn’t matter if it’s for your company, job or career or whatever, set your goals high. What’s the point in using up the energy it takes to just achieve something mediocre? Dare, try, take a risk, learn and be determined. And don’t count your chickens before they hatch. Keep your goals to yourself and just do it. When the road turns, turn or you will end up by the side of the road. Broadcasting what you are going to do to all and sundry isn’t always a good idea. Not least since some will try to talk you out of it. What do you, for instance, think people would have told Obama a few years ago if he had told them he was going to be president of the United States?

You will be hit in the head a few times until you get reach your goals. But remember, the person who experiences most wins. All serious daring starts from within so make sure you are physically and mentally fit since not only does it make you happier, think better but it also gives you the energy to succeed, even when you have set-backs. Don’t forget that people who have really achieved something big in this world have, on average, lost everything they had 3,1 times. Life isn’t easy, but to make the most out of it is entirely up to you.

Success – Only an Inch away from Failure

Friday, May 7th, 2010

The energy that creates great ideas also creates errors. Most truly creative and successful people have hence also had setbacks, frequently huge ones where they lost almost everything they had.

The difference between success and failure is really minute.

Be prepared to fail, on average, 3.1 times before striking it big.

The more people I get to know and the more biographies I read, the more convinced I am that we have to be prepared to fail miserably if we are going to achieve anything worth-while in this world.

The difference between success and failure is really minute. We have to trust our instincts and try, since if we don’t, there is no way we will ever succeed.

If we never fail it means that our goal wasn’t big enough. And if the goal isn’t big enough there is no risk involved. Trying out safe ideas are neither creative nor innovative and no biography will be written about you if that’s how you lead your life.

Creativity can be described as letting go of certainties, someone once said and that is so true since the only thing that’s certain in life is that there are no certainties. So it depends on what you want out of life. Or as George Bernard Shaw put it: “The reasonable man adapts himself to the world – the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man”.

Communication – The key to Successful Leadership!

Monday, April 26th, 2010

It’s beginning to seem to me that we are making the art of succeeding as a leader too complicated. There are umpteen theories that all have one thing in common – they work for some and for others they don’t.

Would Virgin group be what it is today if Richard Branson hadn't mastered the art of communication?

Most people who suddenly find themselves in a leadership position swiftly realize that the top position is completely different from what they imagined. And worse, there is no manual.

There is no school for becoming a successful leader. New leaders frequently feel lonely since there are fewer people privy to high level information. It can be overwhelming. So much so that the fact that a leader’s success depends on communication is frequently forgotten.

Richard Branson is an excellent example of a very successful leader who masters the art of communication. To the extent of jumping from high buildings to get the attention needed to promote a new Virgin venture. Don’t think anybody would dispute how successful he is. But the confusion caused by all these theories and schools of leadership actually led one guy straight out of university to have the audacity to make a comment in a discussion on Linkedin that he had a lot to teach Richard Branson. Indeed? What are the odds of he, or anybody else, becoming as successful a leader as Richard is? Pretty slim, I’d say considering that very few ever become as successful as Richard Branson is. And the success of Virgin is very much down to Richard’s exceptionally good ability to communicate.

The tasks of a leader is, simply put, to vision where a company is heading (strategies, future accomplishments, managing the destiny of the organisation and so forth), find the people the organisation needs to fulfil it’s vision, make choices and take decisions. Leaders also have to continuously serve, learn, correct, evaluate and motivate.

And how are you going to succeed with all that if you don’t master the art of communication ? Both internally and externally it’s the most powerful tool a leader has. It’s crucial to communicate with others about trends that affect the future of your business and stretch your thoughts by discussing your ideas with friends, associates and other great thinkers.

Ideas are an extremely powerful force. By communicating ideas to people you engage their minds and help them see new possibilities and new opportunities. Strong and evocative ideas energize people and incite action. As leaders, our ideas are important. Leaders need clear ideas and philosophies about how to win in the marketplace, how their organisation should operate and how to develop their people.

Leaders succeed because they are able to focus and deal with the 5% of issues that are crucial, build support and create followers, put out fires fast and finish what they started. How would that be possible without communicating? Especially since many decisions are instant so a non-communicative leader would fail miserably.

Successful leaders spend much more time communicating their decision than actually taking the decision. Lots of time is also spent on coaching and motivating others. And, tedious as it can be, repeating the decision to get maximum effect. But despite that most people wrongly believe leaders spend most of their time making decisions. Leaders who only take decisions will fail miserably since communication is the key ingredient. Not communicating enough is hence the main reason for failure and not, as many believe, that they were following the wrong theory. And don’t forget that leaders live in the future so the more your communication enlightens you about tomorrow the better a leader you will be!

The best way to predict the future is to invent it!

Monday, April 19th, 2010

“The most successful leader of all is the one who sees a picture not yet actualised. He sees the things which belong in his present picture but which are not yet there” US political scientist Mary Parker Follett once wrote. And she’s right because if you don’t know where you are going and can’t see it, how are you going to get there?

What does your vision of the future look like – what's the image? When you make colleagues travel with you, what will they see?

Followers actually want a leader with a compelling vision of the future and research shows they respond to a leader who can articulate a vision reflecting their own aspirations. It needs to be engaging, capture their hearts and get them to pay attention. Those who hear it should want to be a part of it.

So what does your vision of the future look like – what’s the image? When you make colleagues travel with you, what will they see? Will they be able to visualize it, remember and make an effort to achieve it?
Great leaders provide inspiring visions and passionately believe they can make a difference by inspiring people to achieve more than they ever dreamed possible. You must be able to provide a clear picture of a change beyond the horizon with a realistic image of what could become. Only then can you with your attitude get people enthusiastic and passionate about playing their role in reaching your destination.

Once all your colleagues have a vision of your aims and goals you can set out to reach them. It is a bit like the old saying: “If you don’t know where you’re going, then for sure you won’t get there.” Warren Bennis says of vision: To choose a direction, an executive must first have developed a mental image of the possible and desirable future state of the organisation.

The best way to impact others is to convey your vision in a dramatic and enduring way. If you bore them, or they don’t really believe in it, the impact will be next to none. A company who buys the grudging compliance of its staff is practically not going anywhere while enthusiastic and participating employees are a crucial aspect of making a vision come true.

A vision should ideally be of long term challenging goals. The odds of realizing the vision may actually not be more than fifty percent, but the company must believe it can. So aim for something worthwhile that will make people stretch themselves to succeed. If not they will not make that extra effort essential for success.

You need to get to the stage where executives and managers can live the visions and missions, be seen doing so and constantly communicate them to their colleagues. And chances of that happening without a mental image is slim. It’s best is to create a noble vision that elevates the energy, enthusiasm and passion of everyone in the company.

And don’t forget to make everybody see a benefit in enabling the vision to come true. There’s no need to worry about laying out the vision in details, it’s the direction that counts. But do remember that a good vision will evolve over time. Having a vision can be a catalyzing force in our lives, but don’t expect to travel a linear path from point A to point B to realize it because no matter how good the vision it has to adapt to an ever changing world.

Branding for success!

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Everything and everyone is a product. A country, a city, a company, a product, a service a person – yes you and me included. And how the market perceives the product determines its value. It’s sounds cynic, I know. But if you want a high value and be sought for on the market you have to create a brand that is in demand and sells.

Want to be assiciated with Chanel or Wall-Mart? Depends on which market you are aiming for.

Want to be assiciated with Chanel or Wall-Mart? Depends on which market you are aiming for.

And then when the product is a success all of a sudden the brand matures, growth slows and it comes under pressure from competitors. This is the time to start innovating and spending again if you want to defend your market position. If not ,don’t complain if nobody wants to hire you, go on holiday to your country, do business with your company or buy the wonderful product or service you are selling.

You may object that some brands, like Cornflakes, or Chanel for that matter, have been around for a long time. But what we buy today is very different from the same product 50 years ago, not least when it comes to packaging and design. If your personal brand is out of date you will have to make an investment to innovate yourself. Maybe learn a new skill, have a make-over or simply learn how to better promote yourself? How you want to be perceived depends on what market you are aiming for.

When it comes to countries, Europe and the US have matured and competitors are moving in. But the West seem to take their current status for granted and the only thing they are doing to defend their market position is protectionism, unfortunately. And they really have to do much more if they want to keep their position in this globalised world. What happened to innovation and making their markets more attractive to investors not to mention more business friendly?

Nowadays it’s irrevocably one global market. And Sweden, to my great surprise, hasn’t wholeheartedly joined. Sweden as a product has matured badly and needs to innovate to get back the position it had on the market in the 60′s and 70′s. Join the global market wholeheartedly, reduce corporate taxation drastically and realize that there is a reason that Sweden’s unemployment is more than twice as high as it’s neighbours Denmark and Norway would make a good start. But there doesn’t seem to be any political will to do so.

More and more Swedish companies are using IT consultants in India. Naturally the Swedes, not least the trade unions, don’t like that. They conveniently forget that the main objective of a company is to make money. And using Indian IT consultants is far cheaper than using their Swedish counterparts. On top if it India, unlike Sweden, has four universities that when it comes to IT are on par with MIT. Unless taxation in Sweden, i.e. the politicians, change we will see more and more Swedish companies outsourcing IT to India.

Obviously this is not only happening in Sweden but in the West as a whole and there is no stopping it. Look at all the out-sourced call centres, for instance. Since it is an issue that is not going away I’m surprised that not more is being done in the West to adapt to the global market. It surprises me that we are not facing up to the issue.

Globalisation is irrevocably the governing principle of commerce. That does not mean it is popular everywhere. The US will continue to lose relative power because of globalisation. It’s ironic that thanks to its generosity in exporting the secrets of success, China and other emerging giants are catching up. Public support for protectionism has hence surged in the United States. But there is only so much current protectionism can achieve. Look at the way China is surging, despite Western protectionism.

Developing nations are not going to cede power to the US and Europe out of gratefulness. So it’s time for the West to face up to reality – their brand is loosing out. It’s time to innovate and make it profitable for businesses again to stop them moving to other parts of the world.
